Annual Asbestos Plan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
In accordance with the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), we are required to inform parents, guardians, and staff each year about the status of asbestos-containing materials in our school building and the availability of our Asbestos Management Plan.
Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in building materials prior to the 1980s because of its fire-resistant and insulating properties. Many school buildings constructed before 1980 may contain asbestos in materials such as floor tiles, pipe insulation, ceiling materials, and other building components.
When asbestos-containing materials remain intact and undisturbed, they generally do not pose a health risk. However, if these materials become damaged or disturbed, asbestos fibers may be released into the air.
West Suburban Montessori School has conducted required inspections of all facilities for asbestos-containing materials. Any identified materials are carefully monitored and maintained in a safe condition.
Our school follows all federal and state regulations regarding asbestos safety, including:
- Periodic surveillance inspections every six months
- Comprehensive re-inspections every three years by licensed inspectors
- Proper maintenance and response procedures if materials become damaged
- Use of licensed professionals for any repair, removal, or renovation work involving asbestos
At this time, all identified asbestos-containing materials in our building are in good condition and do not present a hazard to students or staff.
The school maintains an Asbestos Management Plan documenting inspections and safety procedures. This plan is available for review in the school office upon request.
