A prepared Montessori environment provides appropriate space, developmental materials, a Montessori-trained adult who functions as a guide and freedom in which the child develops order and self-discipline. Dr. Montessori understood the physiological and developmental stages a child undergoes. She was aware of how a deprived environment may stunt proper development. Dr. Montessori recognized that if the needs of a child were met, he or she would feel more relaxed and able to commit his or her will or undivided attention toward a focus on learning. Thus their will or undivided attention would be focused on learning. Likewise, it was Maria Montessori who insisted that children have chairs and tables designed especially for their size. Freedom in a prepared environment to work when ready to work, based on individual needs and interests, enables good coping skills. Good coping skills equal less stress, which in turn enables the brain to function at maximum capacity.
